The Sioux is a tribe.
This term,shortened and corrupted by French traders,resulted in retention of last syllable as " Sioux.
Dakota" and " Lakota" mean " friends" or" allies.
There are various Sioux divisions and each has important cultural , linguistic, territorial and political distinctions.
