Location and Culture

  • At 85 miles north of the equator, singapore lies at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula.
  • Although collectively known as just "Singapore", the Asian Pacific country consists of 63 islands.
  • Although made up of 63 islands, the bulk of Singapore's population lives on the main island.

  • Being less than 100 miles from the equator, Singapore has a climate of a tropical rainforest nature. Temperatures are consistently warm throughout the year, with lots of rainfall, and high humidity.
  • Singapore's population is just under 5.5 million.

  • The official internet domain is .sg, administered by the Singapore Information Network Centre.
  • Being a country made up of Chinese Singaporeans (74%), Malays (13%), Indians (9%), and Eurasians (less than 4%), Singapore has 4 official languages. The languages spoken are English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil with English being the most common.

  • Singapore is such a culturally diverse region that the interests of the residents and tourists widely vary. Singapore is one of the world's greatest countries for food diversity, tourism, technology, and of course import and export.

Quality -of-Life Indicators

  • Overall life expectancy for Singapore is 83.
  • More specifically the life expectancy for Singaporean women is 85 and for men it is 80.
  • The literacy rate for the Pacific Asian island is an astounding 96%.

Why Singapore?

  • Singapore is a metaphorical melting pot.
  • With all the various cultures, religious beliefs, and business specialties, Singapore has positioned itself to be a major factor in international trade.

  • Singapore is not only a major international trade hub. It is also a major tourist destination and the country's culinary prowess is legendary.
  • Aside from the information I learned about Singapore during this class, I fell in love with Singapore as soon as I stepped foot on their soil.

General Economic Conditions

  • The GDP of Singapore is $307.9 billion (US).
  • Of the $307.9 billion the Services industry make up an overwhelming 75%, followed by Industry (25%), Manufacturing (19%), last and definitely least is Agriculture (0%).
  • As of July 2015 the unemployment rate of Singapore is 2%.

  • The imports and exports as percentage of GDP are , respectively, 163.2% and 187.6%.
  • The largest field of employment in Singapore is by far the services industry. The services industry is so large due to, in part, Singapore being an awesome tourist destination. Therefore everything encompassing tourism is vibrant in Singapore.
