PRESENTATION OUTLINE

SILVER

History
Silver was first mined 5,000 years ago in 3,000 BC in Antolia (modern day turkey). This silver was used to trade with other countries.

Nobody knows who discovered silver. It has been used since ancient times.

The symbol Ag came from the Latin word argentum

In 1772 the U.S. based its currency off of the silver dollar and its relationship to gold. Silver was discontinued as a currency in 1965.

PROPERTIES OF SILVER

  • Good conductor-heat and electricity pass through it
  • Maluable- able to be shapped
  • Ductile- able to be drawn into thin wires
  • Tarnish- when silver reacts with the air around it
  • Dense- particles are closely compacted

Uses of Silver

Used in jewelry and for different objects in different cultures

Silver is also used in photography. Silver bromide and silver iodide are sensitive to light. Thus when mixed with the right materials they will create pictures.

Silver is also used in computer components and keyboards because it is a good conductor.

Major Producers of Silver

Silver is sometimes found in its pure form, but most of the time it is mined and found as ore.
