WHAT IS SIKHISM?

  • Sikhism is the worlds 5th largest religion.
  • Sikhism was founded over 500 years ago.
  • Sikhism was founded in Punjab by guru Nanak in the 15th century.

  • Sikhism teaches the equality of people.
  • It preaches that people of different races, religions, or sex are all equal in gods eyes.
  • Sikhism teaches the full equality of men and women.
  • Sikhism teaches religious freedom.
  • Sikhism emphasizes daily devotion to god.

THREE PRINCIPLES OF SIKHISM

  • Kirat Karo: work hard and honestly.
  • Wand Ke Chhako: share with the needy.
  • Naam Jappo: always remember god.

MOOL MANTAR

  • Mool Mantar is a basic prayer which sums up the Sikh religion.
  • "THERE IS ONE GOD. HIS NAME IS TRUTH. HE IS THE CREATOR. HE IS PRESENT THROUGHOUT HIS CREATION. HE FEARS NONE. HE HATES NONE. HIS EXISTENCE IS IMMORTAL. HE IS NOT BORN NOR DOES HE DIE. HE IS SELF-ILLUMINATED. HE IS REALIZED THROUGH THE GRACE OF THE GURU."

GURU NANAK DEV

  • First guru of the Sikhs.
  • Guru Nanak spoke against tyranny, social injustice, religious hypocrisy, empty rituals and superstitions.
  • He preached the equality of humans.

GURU GRANTH SAHIB

  • Holy book of the Sikhs & is written in Punjabi.
  • Spiritual guide for the Sikhs.
  • The hymns provide broad guidelines for harmonious living.
  • The book is kept in all gurdwaras and in many Sikh houses.
  • Contains a total of 5867 hymns in 1430 pages
