PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Sickness and Disease

Health problems that can affect us throughout life

Germs

are tiny microorganisms that exist all around us.

They can live in dirt or water, on our skin, on door handles, on keyboards, and many other places.

Some germs are good...

...like the 100 trillion 'good' germs in our gut that aid in digestion.

Pathogens are germs that cause us to get sick.

Bacteria

are tiny one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environment to live.

Infections caused by bacteria include:

  • strep throat
  • ear infection
  • cavities
  • pneumonia

Viruses

need to live inside a host to grow and reproduce.

The common cold, chicken pox, measles, and influenza are viral infections.

Fungi

get their nutrients from plants, animals, or people.

Athlete's foot

is a fungal infection

Protozoa

love moisture and often spread disease through water

Some protozoa cause intestinal infections that lead to diarrhea, nausea, and belly pain.

Steering clear of things that spread germs is the best way to protect yourself from getting sick.

Hand-washing: the right way

  • Wet your hands with warm water
  • Apply soap
  • Lather and scrub for 20 seconds (think, "Row-row-row your boat")
  • Rinse
  • Dry

Cover your cough (and sneeze!)

Get routine immunizations

These help keep your immune system strong and prepared to battle germs
