Shigellosis

WHAT IS IT?

  • Shigellosis is an intestinal illness
  • Symptoms can be diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and nausea
  • Can last 5-7 days
  • May develop blood stream infections, seizures, kidney failure or arthritis
  • Caused by a bacteria called Shigella

HEALING

  • May not need medical treatment and will fully recover
  • May need hospitalization if you have a weak immune system

HOW TO CATCH IT

  • Is very infectious and can spread easily
  • Can spread bacteria by not washing hands after using the toilet
  • Being around the infectious person
  • Shigellosis bacteria in mucus glands
