SHIFT WORK SLEEP DISORDER (SWSD)

SWSD is a circadian rhythm sleep disorder characterized by insomnia and excessive sleepiness affecting people whose work hours overlap with the typical sleep period.

SYMPTOMS

• Insomnia or the inability to sleep when you need to

CAUSE

  • Adjusting to a work schedule that takes place during a time which most people sleep

EFFECTS/DANGER

  • Increased accidents
  • Increased work related errors
  • Increased sick leave
  • Increased irritability or mood swings

TREATMENTS

  • Prescribed sleep/wake scheduling
  • Bright light treatment
  • Medications that promote altertness
  • Melatonin treatment
  • Medications that promote daytime sleep
