PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Introduction
The heart is a four chamber muscle that pumps blood to every cell in the body. The blood carries oxygen, nutrients (including C6H12O6) and other substances to every cell. The blood also carries carbon dioxide away from cells and to the lungs. The heart is a muscle that beats (pumps) about 70 times per minute. The sheep’s heart is similar, but smaller, than the human heart and gives us a good example of the anatomy of this critical organ.
OBJECTIVE
WE DISSECTED THE SHEEP'S HEART BECAUSE MR.DIAZ WANTED TO US TO SEE HOW THE HEART WORKS AND LOOKS AND ITS INSIDE FUNCTIONS and
1. To learn about the anatomy of the mammalian heart
2. To begin to learn about the procedures of conducting a science lab activity
Materials
1. Preserved sheep’s heart
2. Dissecting tray
3. Dissecting Kit
a. Scalpel
b. Two probes
c. Scissors
d. Metric ruler
e. Tweezers
4. Scale
5. Microscope and slides.
6. Gloves
IV. Procedure
1. Rinse and dry the heart. Weigh the heart on the scale. Measure the heart in centimeters. Record your observations.
2. Orient the heart with the ventral side facing you – the heart’s left side should be in your right hand. Study the exterior of the heart, the superior (top) of the heart and try to locate and identify the arteries and veins.
3. Place the heart on the dissecting tray. Using the scalpel, carefully make a lateral cut – dividing the heart into a front and a back half.
4. Study the interior structure of the heart. Identify the right and left atria, the ventricles, the valves and the blood vessels. Identify the left ventricle and the aorta.
IV. Producure #2
5. With tweezers, take samples of the heart muscle tissue and prepare a slide. View the slide under 40X magnification and record your observations. Do the same with samples of the valve tissue, the blood vessel tissue and the heart fat. Record your observations.
6. Make a drawing of the interior of the heart and label the four chambers and any other parts you can identify.
7. Dispose of the heart in the designated trash can. Thoroughly clean the dissecting kit and tray.
8. Complete the Observation-Data section of this report.
9. Complete the Conclusions section of this report.
1. Mass (weight) of the heart grams
CONCLUSION
i learned how to cut a sheep's heart. i learned which part of the heart is the left and the right. i also
