WHO IS SELIGMAN?

  • Dr. Seligman was born on August 12, 1942 in Albany, New York.
  • Recieved his A.B. at Princeton University for Philosophy in 1964.
  • Recieved his PHD at the University of Pennsylvania for Psychology in 1967.
  • Dr. Martin Seligman is the director of:Positive psychology center and the Zellerbach family professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.
  • A leading authority in Positive Psychology, resilience, learned helplessness, optimism and pessimism.

CONTRIBUTION TO SOCIETY

  • Co-founded the field of positive psychology
  • Has written almost 20 self-help books
  • Has written more than 250 scholarly publications
  • Came up with the theory of learned helplessness
  • Father of Modern Positive Psychology

WHEN?

  • In the 1960s happiness was not thought to be measurable.
  • In the 1980s Ed Diener began the fight for a psychological study of happiness.
  • In 1997 Seligman worked with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi to make positive psychology into a real branch of psychology.
  • When 1998 came and Seligman was voted in as the president of thr American Psychological Association, positive psychology was born.
  • During the 2000s seligman has mainly worked on promoting positive psychology.

WHERE?

  • Studied at Princeton and The University of Pennsylvania.
  • Did research at the University of Pennsylvania on learned helplessness.
  • Initially set the stage for positive psychology in Hawaii.
  • Still works at the University of Pennsylvania.

WHY DOES HIS RESEARCH MATTER?

  • His research in learned helplessness and pessimism has made drepression easier to diagnose and treat.
  • Most psychological research focuses on disorders while his is designed to better already good mental health.
  • He researches techniques that can be used in everyday life to benefit peoples overall happiness.
  • He focuses on what people do correctly to help us promote the good in our world and foster optimism.
  • His work in learned helplessness has helped in the therapy of abuse victims.

AFFECTS ON MODERN PSYCHOLOGY

  • Seligman co-created Positive Psychology,
  • Came up with the learned helplessness theory,
  • And continues to advocate and teach his theories to students.
  • He has also inspired a host of scientists to expound on his studies keeping positive psychology alive.

INTERESTING FACTOIDS

  • Seligman has been criticized for his testing of learned helplessness on dogs through electric shocks.
  • He won the Guggenheim Fellowship for social sciences.
  • In late 1997 Sigelman rescued Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi from drowning in Hawaii.
  • The same day he rescued Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi they drew the groundwork of positive psychology.
  • Prior to that day they had never met each other.
