Secession- When?

  • December 20th, 1860-June 8th, 1861
  • Southerners create new government first.
  • First seven states in the Lower South create gov. first.
  • Hostility at Fort Sumter in April 12, 1821.
  • Fort Sumter causes southern boarder states to be Confederate.

  • "Spokesman of the South."
  • Believed Southern way of life was attacked.
  • Hoped for compromise but later invoked secession.
  • Believed a group of states should nullify laws

  • Nationalists
  • Believed the Constitution should follow the People's wishes.
  • They disagreed with the fact of Cooperate Bodies would decide on laws.
  • This rallied the Northern States.

Lincoln Gets Elected

  • South Carolina Seceded.
  • Some states slowly seceded.
  • Used the spirit of 1776 of a group leaving a governing power.
  • Confederates also seize power over federal forts and arsenals.
  • Federal troops only held 4 forts including Fort Sumter.

How Did the North React?

  • Were against Southerners leaving but not forcing them in the Union.
  • Prevention of Disintegration in the Union.                                 

Sumter

  • Confederates worked to get border states.
  • On April 12, 1861 Confederates opened fire on Fort Sumter.
  • At 2:30PM Major Robert Anderson surrendered the fort and it was evacuated.
  • No soildiers were killed in the battle.
