CHILDHOOD

  • Born on the border between Texas and Arkansas
  • He took piano lessons as a kid
  • He was a traveling musician

WHAT WAS HAPPENING

  • Henry Ford came along to make cars.
  • The Wright Brothers made planes at the time.
  • WW1 started in 1914.

FAMILY

  • His parents' names were Florence Givens and Giles Joplin.
  • Florence was a singer and a banjo player
  • Giles was a violinist
  • His father was a slave
  • He had 5 brothers and sisters.

ADULT LIFE

  • Wrote many popular songs
  • His first song was Original Rag
  • He also made ballet and opera music too

DEATH

  • He died from dimensia, a form of syphillis
  • He died on April 1,1917
  • He was though to have it years earlier but it wasn't as bad
  • He was buried at Saint Michaels cemetery in East Elmurst
  • His grave was unmarked for 57 years
