During the night, Thomas and his closest friends, Minho and Newt, discover that the people that saved them from the Maze and put them in dorms are now dead, hung.

They find a boy named Aris that survived a similar experiment, while the others discover tattoos on their necks that designate their roles, withThomas to be killed by group B.

They are told they must participate in another experiment by going through a booby trapped tunnel and crossing the desert to a designated area called "Safe Haven".

Martin O' Donnell: "Blow me Away"
The Gladers travel towards a city. In the city they encounter a man infected with the flare, who acts crazy with fear of the approaching storm, which brings with it deadly lightning that kills most of the Gladers.

Thomas makes a deal with a crank named Jorge and together as a group they travel through the city having to face cranks that look more like zombies then people, that try to attack them along the way.

Thomas receives a telepathic warning from Theresa saying that something terrible is going to happen to him soon. As the Gladers travel further into the desert, they encounter Theresa and a group of girls,"Group B".

Linkin Park: "In The End"
As the rest of the group travels, Theresa makes an appearance and tell Thomas, "the act is over". She appears with Aris, and kisses Aris, crushing Thomas who had a sort of romantic relationship with in the previous book. They then proceed to fight and shut Thomas up in a room, leaving him to die.

Evenessence: "Immortal"
Thomas knows that he is dead , but is soon rescued by Theresa and Aris again. They claim that what happened before was all an act that WICKED forced them to do to save Thomas's life. But it is too late for Thomas as things are irreparably changed between him and Theresa.
