PRESENTATION OUTLINE

OXYGEN

BY: JACALYN KLIEWER

HISTORY

  • When: 1774
  • Where: Wiltshire
  • Who: Joseph Prietly is given credit
  • Uses back then: They used it to make their candles burn brighter.
  • Name: Origin- oxys, genes Language- Greek Symbol- O.

HISTORY CONT.
Person or Civilization?: Different scientists were working on it but Prietly is given credit because he published the discovery first.

SOURCES

  • Oxygen can be found anywhere beneath the earth's atmosphere.
  • Oxygen makes up 21% of the earth's atmosphere.
  • Oxygen is the 3rd most abundant element in the universe.
  • It also accounts for nearly half of the mass of the earth's crust.

SOURCES CONT.
Oxygen is processed by taking large amounts of oxygen being extracted from liquified air through a process known as fractional distillation, which is when the mixture is separated into its component parts.

PROPERTIES

  • Physical State: Gas or Liquid
  • Melting Point: -361.81 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Boiling Point:-297.32 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Density: 0.001429 g/cm cubed
  • Reactive? Yes, with iron, streams of high pressure oxygen produces steel.

PROPERTIES CONT.

  • Unique Properties: This gas is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.
  • These properties don't help explain how ancient civilizations used it.
  • Oxygen is worth $0.02 per 100g.

PROPERTIES CONT.
These properties make oxygen unique because when its a gas you can't see, smell, or taste it, but when its a liquid you can.

USES
Gaseous oxygen is used with the precursor to PVC and for oxy-acetylene welding and cutting of metals. It has no odor so you can use it in enclosed areas with no smells.

USES CONT.
Supports Life: Doctors proscribe oxygen for patients with respiratory ailments. So it is easy to dispense because it has no smell.

USES CONT.
The greatest commercial use for oxygen is in the steel industry. It works with iron when high pressure oxygen produces steel. It's colorless so they don't need to change the color of the steel when it is made.
