Matter

• Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.

Matter exists in three different states:

• Solids
• Liquids
• Gases

Question of the day
What state of matter has the fastest moving particles?

Answer:
Gas has the fastest moving particles. The particles are more spread apart and free to move.

SOLIDS

• The particles in a solid are packed very tightly and move slowly.
• Solids have a definite shape and volume.

LIQUIDS

• Liquids have a definite, but not a fixed shape.
• The particles are close together, but still able to move.
• Liquids conform to the container they are in.

GASES

• The particles of gas are spread apart and move very quickly.

SOLID CHANGING TO GAS

• Solids can change to a gas through a process called sublimation.
• Sublimation happens when a solid uses heat to change to a gas without going through a liquid phase.

GAS CHANGING TO SOLID

• A gas changing to a solid without going through a liquid state is called deposition.
• When the area around a leaf gets to a certain lower temperature, the oxygen there can freeze onto the leaf. It goes from a gas to a solid without going through a liquid phase.
