MATTER

  • Definition: Any thing that's as mass and takes up space.
  • This rock has matter.
  • Feelings and thoughts are not made of matter.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

Definition: a characteristic of a substance that does not involve a chemical change.

This banana's color is yellow. Color is a physical property.

The fish in this market are smelly. Smell is a physical property.

This volleyball is round. Shape is a physical.

This tree's bark has a rough texture. Texture is physical property.

DENSITY

  • The equation for density is mass divided by volume.
  • If an object density is higher than 1 it will sink.
  • If an object has a density less than 1 it will float.

This brick will sink because it has a density higher than 1.

SOLUBILITY

  • Is the ability for a substance to desolve in a liquid.

This lemonade mix is soluble because it desolve a in the water.

PHYSICAL CHANGE

A change of matter from one form to another without a change of chemical property.

This ice changed from a solid to a liquid it went through a physical change.

Since this can is crushed it gas gone through a physical change.

This tinfoil changed from a flat sheet to a ball. It went through a physical change.

This Popsicle is changing from a solid to a liquid. It's going through a physical change.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

The ability to participate in a chemical change.

When iron is exposed to oxygen for a while it forms rust. This is called reactivity.

This grass has flammability. Flammability is a chemical property.

CHEMICAL CHANGES

A change that occurs when 1 or 2+ substances change into an entirely new substance.

This penny was a brown color but is now a green color. Color is a chemical change.

This sour milk went through a chemical change that changed its odor.
