PRESENTATION OUTLINE
WHAT DO CONCUSSIONS AFFECT IN YOUR BRAIN?
What causes concussions?
A concussion is caused when you get hit hard enough in the head by something. A concussion can also be caused with rapid acceleration of the head but that case is rare in humans.
What happens in your head when you get a concussion?
When you get a concussion your brain goes through the protective fluid inside your skull and hits the sides of your skull.
When your brain hits the inside of your skull it normally causes your brain to bruise also called a contusion, on the sides that were damaged. That can slowly destroy the cell body in your brain.
Symptoms of a concussion:
Some ways you know you have a concussion is when you have brief loss of consciousness impared memory, reduced problem solving ability, and attention problems.
Facts
-5-10% of athletes will suffer from a concussion
-47% of athletes don't report symptoms of a concussion.
-less than 10% of sports related concussions involve unconsciousness.
Your brain after a concussion:
Your brain after a concussion can be severely damaged, some of your cell body can start to stretch and die and your brain can be bruised badly.
When your brain is bruised it can cause later brain damage or worse, such as being paralyzed. Your brain is the most protected part of your body,
it is hard to think that is can get damaged so quickly. Your brain is protected by not just your skull but also a " wall " of membranes which block out harmful molecules.
Although it may sound like your brain is practically untouchable it isn't, after a concussion a lot changes inside your head. A concussion punctures through that " wall " of membranes in your head which leaves your brain vulnerable to diseases and such.
It also can cause major damage to your brain, if too may harmful membranes get to your brain that can cause mild-moderate brain problems.
