What is sound? Sound is produced by vibrating objects. We can hear sounds because we use our sense of hearing.It travels through the air until it reaches our ears. If there is no material medium nearby (air,water,wood,metal), sound does not travel. Sound transmits energy from the object that produces the vibration to the object that receives it.
PITCH: allows us to destinguish high pitched sounds from low pitched sounds.A child has a higher pitched voice. TIMBRE: allows us to identify who or what produced the sound. THE INTENSITY: tells us if the sound is soft or loud.
ECHO Echo: when sound waves travel and meet and object , they reflect off it and return to our ears. This is called an echo. Bats ,use echo to orient themeselves and to hunt for hunt for prey at night.
NOISE Some sounds , like water flowing in a river or a bird singing , are pleasant sounds. Others , like the sound of traffic or an electric drill, are unpleasant and irritating. When noise is very intense and persistent, it can damage our health.This is called noise pollution some examples are Traffic , construction equipment, stereos and television at high volume.
DECIBELS the intensity of sound is measured in decibels . A 10-decibel sound is almost impossible to hear, while a 120 decibel sound is so intense that it hurts our ears.
