  • Today we will be learning about the layers of the Earth.
  • Does anyone know any layers already?

Facts about the Crust

  • The Crust is an outer solid layer of the earth
  • This is the layer in which life as we know it exists!
  • It is about 3-5 miles thick in the ocean bed
  • This is the only layer in the earth that can be investigated by drilling into it!

Facts about the Mantle

  • The mantle is 1,800 miles thick
  • Makes up 85% of the Earths weight
  • It is made of molten iron, minerals, and other semi solid rocks that can flow under pressure

Facts of the Outer Core

  • Third layer of the Earth
  • Only liquid layer
  • Made up of iron, nickel, and small amounts of other substances
  • Is responsible for Earth's magnetic field

Facts about the Inner Core

  • Earth's innermost section
  • Solid
  • Made up of iron-nickel alloy
  • 5400 Degrees Celsius
