PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PACKING WITH BOYS AND GIRLS

JAELYN LUNDSTROM

PROBLEM

WHICH GENDER IS BETTER AT PACKING A BOX? BOYS OR GIRLS?

BACKGROUND INFO

  • Many scientists have tested this.
  • Many of them have had the outcome of boys being better.
  • It is said that boys have a spacial gaging in there minds.
  • Which means they can tell how much can fit in a space.
  • Girls typically stuff their belongings, where boys neatly pack their things.

HYPOTHESIS

  • If a boy and a girl are given 30 seconds
  • To pack a box,
  • Which gender will pack the box correctly first?

MATERIALS

  • 10 boy volunteers
  • 10 girl volunteers
  • 2 boxes of the same size
  • Miscellaneous items to pack in boxes
  • Stopwatch

VARIABLES

  • Independent variable is the gender of volunteers
  • Dependent variable is the times the volunteers took.
  • Control variable is the size of the box and the # of items

PROCEDURE

  • Find 10 boy volunteers to pack the box
  • Find 10 girl volunteers, you must have an equal number.
  • With your two boxes, first YOU test to make sure all the items can fit.
  • Then, have 1 boy and 1 girl pack the box. Have them start when you say go!
  • Set stopwatch to 30 seconds, and when the time is up, they MUST stop immediately

PROCEDURE

  • Record time, and record which gender won.
  • If the volunteers finish before the timer runs out, record the times.
  • Repeat trials 10 times, continuing with 1 boy and 1 girl each time.

RESULTS

  • The average: 25.5 for boys. This shows boys take longer.
  • The average: 22 for girls. Girls take a shorter time, but on average don't win
  • Mode: 24.
  • Median: 24. This is where the middle mark for both genders time.

CONCLUSION

  • I accept my hypothesis because 6/10 boys finished packing first.
  • Only 4/10 girls finished packing first.
  • Girls got an average time faster than boys, but most girls couldn't get it packed.
  • Girls randomly grabbed things and stuffed them, boys usually grabbed the larger items first.
  • Both genders used to little things as "space stuffers"
