Asian Elephants
For my project I researched the Asian Elephant. The elephants scientific name is elephas maximus indicus. The Asian Elephant is lives in tropical forests and grasslands. These animals are herbivores, which means they don't eat meat. Their main diet includes roots, berries, bark, and grass. Asian Elephants are very social and women will form groups of six or seven to travel in. Occasionally a herd will form out of a couple of these groups. They can be anywhere from 6- 11 feet and weigh around 11, 000 pounds! Their status is endangered. There are only about 23,000 of this type of elephant left and we need to start protecting them before they're gone.
Extinction
These animals are almost extinct because of their valuable tusks. Asian Elephant tusk is pure ivory and is expensive and beautiful. The number of kills has decreased since hunting was outlawed, but it still happens today.
Extinction Prevention
Organizations such as Wildlife Conservation Society are taking matters into their own hands. They coordinate with government officials in Asia to maintain the keeping of these animals. Scientists are being sent over to monitor elephants and make sure that there isn't a great number dying. WCS also strives to stop conflicts between humans and elephants. These actions are steadily reducing the death of Asian Elephants.
How can I help?
The answer is simple: donations. While it seems cliché, nothing can happen to help elephants without money. Since you can't go to Asia to help directly, the next best way is donating.
