What are fossil fuels?
A material such as coal that forms over millions of years from the remains of ancient plants and animals.
Ex. Gasoline used in vehicles and propane used in a gas grill.

Energy from the sun...
Fossil fuels contain energy that came from the sun. In fact, the sun is the source of energy for most of Earth's processes.

Ex: Offshore oil rigs drill for the fossil fuel petroleum under the ocean floor

Using Fossil Fuel Energy...
The chemical energy in fossil fuels comes from the sun. Millions of years later, power plants transform that chemical energy to the electrical energy that powers a hair dryer.

What is combustion?
The process of burning a fuel to produce thermal energy. During combustion, the fuel's chemical energy can be used to heat water until the water boils and produces steam.

Turbines
Wind turbines are like a fan, with blades attached to an axle. The pressure of the steam on the blades causes the turbine to spin very fast.
