The taiga has little plant diversity. The taiga mainly has coniferous trees. There are willow, oak and birch trees. These trees don't use a lot of energy to regrow leaves. The leaves stay all year. Little sunlight gets through the trees.
There are many pine cones,spruces and larches. Cones are shaped to have snow slide off. Birch adapted to taiga by being flexible. Branches on birch trees don't break easily.
There are long harsh winters in the taiga. Winter last six to seven months. Cold winds from the arctic make the winters very cold. Winter day are short. Low -65 F (-54 C) High 30 F (-1 C)
The Taiga has short very wet summers. It last three to four months. Summer days are long. It rains more in the summer. Low 20 F (-7 C) High 70 F (21 C)
Insects can drain nutrients from trees that causes them to be brittle and not grow. Trees not growing is harmful to the ecosystem. Fires can remove sick old trees.
