MAP OF TAIGA LOCATIONS

Taiga ground is rocky and covered with undecayed leaves. The soil is low on nutrients and has a lot of acid. There is also some areas with permafrost.

The taiga has little plant diversity. The taiga mainly has coniferous trees. There are willow, oak and birch trees. These trees don't use a lot of energy to regrow leaves. The leaves stay all year. Little sunlight gets through the trees.

There are many pine cones, spruces and larches. Cones are shaped to have snow slide off. Birch adapted to taiga by being flexible. Branches on birch trees don't break easily.

When people cut down trees it effects the food chain. Animals will have a very hard time getting the vegetation that is needed to live.

OTHER TAIGA PLACES...

  • Great Slave Lake
  • Great Bear Lake

There are long harsh winters in the taiga. Winter last six to seven months. Cold winds from the arctic make the winters very cold. Winter day are short. Low -65 F (-54 C) High 30 F (-1 C)

The Taiga has short very wet summers. It last three to four months. Summer days are long. It rains more in the summer. Low 20 F (-7 C) High 70 F (21 C)

Rainfall is from 10-30 inches (25-75 cm). Glaciers left cuts and depressions on land that filled with rain.

Animals that live in the Taiga are: foxes, lynxes, bears, wolves, mooses, caribou, deer, beavers, minks and squirrels.

It is very hard for animals to get food especially during winter. Most animals have thick fur to be safe during the harsh winters.

Bark beetles, pine beetles, leaf miner, larch sawfly, spruce bud worm and spruce cone worms are some insects that can survive in the Taiga.

Insects can drain nutrients from trees that causes them to be brittle and not grow. Trees not growing is harmful to the ecosystem. Fires can remove sick old trees.
