MATERIALS

  • Chalk
  • Water
  • Vinegar

Question
Which liquid will dissolve the chalk?

Hypothesis
If we place the chalk in the liquid it will dissolve in the vinegar because vinegar is an acidic liquid.

The chalk dissolved in the vinegar because chalk is made out of calcium sulphate which means it dissolves in weak acids. Vinegar is a weak acid so right away it started to dissolve.

The chalk did not dissolve in the water because water is not an acid. The chalk got softer but did not dissolve.

In conclusion we proved our hypothesis correct. In our hypothesis we stated that the chalk would dissolve in the vinegar.
