PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE GREAT VICTORIAN DESERT

BY BEN, KAEN AND COHEN

A desert ecosystem can be described as a barren plain. These ecosystems are usually natural and can be clustered by a variety of desert plants. They also have a large range of abiotic and biotic factors.

Some of the abiotic factors are:
•Oxygen
•Sunlight(high exposure)
•Temperature(heat)
•Wind(high exposure)
•Humidity(hot)
•Soil Type(sandy)
•Fires(moderate)
•Water(scarce)
•Lightning(occasional)

Some of the biotic factors are:
•Predators(snakes, lizards, dingos)
•Prey(insects etc.)
•Parasites(ticks, fleas etc.)
•Fungi & Infectious Organisms(lichen etc.)

Food Chain

Marigold Daisy(producer) > Inch-man Bull Ant(primary consumer) > Blind Snake(secondary consumer) > Bandy Bandy Snake(tertiary consumer) > Wedged Tail Eagle(quaternary consumer)

Research Question 1
"Choose a key biotic and abiotic factor and explain the importance on the ecosystem" (Water and Bearded Dragons)
-Desert bearded dragons rarely drink water from their environment due to the scarce source; instead they obtain water from their prey.

Research Question 2
"Choose a relationship between at least 2 organisms and explain it's importance to the ecosystem"
-Rabbits can cause serious erosion which significantly impacts on the desert environment. Dingos are a major predator of rabbits. Without the dingos preying on the rabbits, the desert ecosystems will be overrun with rabbits. This will lead to the destruction of the environment including the destruction of native food sources leading to the extinction of some native animals.

Research Question 3
"What is the current condition of the ecosystem?"
-Due to the isolation of the region, the plain of sand is barren. This means that the land is not suitable for pastoralist and agriculture but suits the needs for a desert environment.

Research Question 4
"Choose 1 main factor that impacts the ecosystem and explain the damage caused to the ecosystem" (Climate Change)
-Climate change can significantly impact the desert ecosystem negatively. Climate change can affect desert negatively by; droughts, higher temperatures, agriculture irrigation and potassium cyanide mining. Droughts can cause the water holes in the deserts to dry up and this will lead to the destruction of native plants and animals. Agriculture irrigation in the long term, can cause the soil salt levels to rise; this will make the soil unable to support the desert plants. The potassium cyanide used in gold mining May posing the wildlife.

Research Question 5
"Explain how long the ecosystem takes to recover from the changes caused by the impact chosen in Q4" (Climate Change)
-The deserts arid conditions mean that the ecosystem takes a long time to recover
