HISTORY

  • The horrors of WWII sparked the modernism movement.
  • The idea of writing realistically became very important in the 1920's and 1930's.
  • In the early 1900's people were rebelling against many accepted social ideas.
  • Modernists authors felt betrayed by WWI.

REBELLION ERA

  • This took place in the early 1900's.
  • Change was the often and normal during this time, such as in technology.
  • Change also took place in art, philosophy and social changes were prevalent.
  • In this area things were not clear cut, it had no clear distinction, such as good and evil.

HARLEM RENASIANCE

  • A famous and strong movement in 1920's.
  • It was African-American based writers in New York.
  • It was lead by Countee Cotton and Langston Hughes.
  • Woman who contributed are Marianne Moore, William Carter and many more.
  • This movement sought to give blacks a voice and to be heard, showing their culture.

TRAITS OF MODERNISM

  • Known for breaking tradition
  • Modernists don' t believe in undoubtably truths.
  • Modernists believe life I is anarchy.
  • Modernists are very worried about sub-conscious.
  • In modernism it is believed that all is relative.

MORE TRAITS

  • Modernists feel no connection with history or intuition.
  • Modernists promote the individual.
  • They feel that inner strength his important enough to be celebrated.
  • They believe the world is created based on how we see it.

F SCOTTS FITZGERALD

  • He is a famous modernists writer.
  • His first novel is "This Side of Paradise"
  • He fell in love with a woman named Zelda.
  • One of his most famous works is the "Great Gatsby".
  • He was born in 1896 and died in1940.
