No Commission
Director: Swizz Beats and the Dean Collection

The Art Fair I will be covering is No Commission. It is lead by Swizz Beats who last year curated several booths at SCOPE last year. He also hosted a panel this year with Simon de Pury where the topic of conversation was Instagram and access to great art.

It was a star-studded event for No Commission as one would expect at Miami Basel week, the fair kicked off with a free concert headlined by Swizz Beat's wife, Alicia Keys.

Artists

  • Swoon, KAWS, Kehinde Wiley, D Face, Shepard Fairey, Dustin Yellin, Sanford Biggers, Cryptik, Sean Hart, Gordon Parks, etc.
  • An interesting collection of young, innovative artists
Like last year, he continued to work with artists like Swoon typically work within an activist mentality.

Gallery-Free Art Fair

Located in Wynwood... The name of the fair says it all. Galleries are not allowed to participate in this fair. The show focuses on artist and buyer with no middle man. In wondering how these artist's galleries felt about it, the vast majority of the works appeared to be created or completed in 2015. My assumption is that Swizz Beatz contacted these artists (many of whom he collects personally) to provide a limited number of works to the fair with the permission of their gallery.

THE HELIOTROPE FOUNDATION

Despite the star-studded, flashy, and edgy art, the fair had a Non-Profit mission. They offered numbered limited edition prints provided by Swoon to support her non-profit the Heliotrope foundation. Priced at $50 each, patrons and fair-goers who couldn't afford the top items could walk away with a print of the work and the satisfaction of having supported a good cause.

- The attendance was strong and consistent.

the art: The art exhibited was contemporary and innovative. Yet, at the same time, reasonably priced and suitable for a domestic setting. However, a subsection of the fair called PLAY showcased video and new media, serving as a platform to encourage fair-goers to engage with the digital realm of the art industry.

the presentation style: Clean, crisp and contemporary. The beach setting, placement of plants, lounge area as well as an abundance of natural light helped to make the white cube gallery stalls engaging, approachable and accessible. It allowed visitors to comfortable discover and collect some of the most compelling contemporary art being produced today.

-galleries involved: PULSE focused on providing an international community of emerging and established galleries with a dynamic platform for connecting with a global audience. PULSE Miami Beach hosted galleries from three continents, with over 85% presenting three artists or less. Over a quarter of the fair was comprised of first-time exhibitors and and nearly half participated in last year’s Miami edition.

design miami/

Arguable one of the Sotheby's student's favorite fairs in Miami this season, Design Miami/ was the premier destination for collecting, exhibiting, discussing, and creating collectible design.

This fair yearly occurs alongside the Art Basel fairs in Miami and Basel, Switzerland.

Also much like Art Basel, Design Miami/ also has numerous satellite fairs. The existence of these satellites indicates the prestigious nature of Design Miami/.

Gallerist

Gallerists from all over the world attended and presented museum-quality exhibitions of twentieth and twenty-first century furniture, lighting, and objets d'art.

Each booth was uniquely designed, and many credited a booth designer. Acknowledging the work of these types of designers indicated that skill in design was not limited to the gallerists' design objects, but rather that the whole space was artistic and could be considered an art object.

Sponsors: Audi, Swarovski, Fendi, Perrier-Jouet
Partners: Artsy

This year in Miami it was sponsored by many prestigious companies, such as Audi, Swarovski, Fendi and Perrier-Jouet.

Notable, Design Miami/ also partnered up with Artsy, one of the leading online resources for art and design collecting and education. With this partnership, Design Miami/ was introduced to Artsy's growing global audience, and thus increased their international presence.

nada

NADA – the new art dealers alliance is a non profit arts organization dedicated to the cultivation and support of new talents in contemporary art.

This organization makes fairs in 3 different locations – Miami; New York; Cologne.
- Miami and New York Have the same concept
- Cologne is made in collaboration with Art Cologne

Non-Profit, Affordable, Emerging

The main idea is to “Explore new or underexposed art that is not typical of the art establishment”
It is an alternative option (considering more mainstream fairs) to see galleries dealing with emerging contemporary art. Also is the only major art fair in the United States to be run by a non-profit organization.

The galleries work mainly with emerging artists and is probably one of the fairs during the “Basel” week it most affordable prices.

Gathering galleries from the U.S; Europe; Asia and central America, Nada has a good share of new galleries that represent emerging artists and also more established galleries such as: Canada; Marlborough Chelsea and White Collummns.

For the first time the fair was held in the Fontainebleau Hotel, much more central and accessible to guests then the previous editions.

Some of the funds raised during NADA Miami Beach will be awarded to the NADA international exhibitor prize, an initiative to bring more international exhibitors.Several events and programs are held during the fair such as: Artspace; Nada Shop; Cura; Nadawave.
