Karana did not belong on the mainland. In the non-fiction article it says that the Lost Woman of San Nicholas Island died about seven weeks after she got to America. This shows that she was not adjusted to the mainland, so she did not belong on America.
Karana's family's past is at the island, and in a way it sort of ''died'' when she left. In the book on page 177 it says, 'Nor, thinking of the past, of the many summers and winters and springs that had gone, I could see each of them. They were all one, a tight feeling in my chest and nothing more.' This shows that she misses the past and then when she leaves the island, she leaves the past behind.
The Island was Karana's home. In the book on page 70 Karana thinks to herself and says in her mind, ''The Island of the Blue Dolphins was my home; I had no other.'' This shows that Karana wants to stay on the island because it was her home.
Now I have shown you that Karana should NOT have been taken off the island. We should care because, once Karana was taken off the island no one could understand her language, so it was hard to tell who she was and then, people might name her and they would not be able to tell if she liked the name or not so she would not have much power. We should also care because, how would YOU feel if you could not pick your own name? You would probably feel powerless.
