NOT SO FUN FACTS

  • Causes about 1.2 million illnesses in the United States.
  • 23,000 hospitalizations
  • 450 deaths
  • Salmonella usually last 4 to 7 days
  • Also called salmonellosis

TRANSMISSION

  • swallowing the bacterium
  • Infected people who prepare food

SALMONELLA SYMPTOMS

  • diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Pain in joints
  • irritation of the eyes and painful urination

PREVENT SALMONELLA

  • Don’t drink milk that is unpasteurized.
  • Don’t eat foods containing raw eggs
  • Keep eggs refrigerated.
  • Wash hands immediately after handling raw poultry or raw eggs.
  • Cook eggs thoroughly.

TREATMENT

  • Most people recover within 5 to 7days
  • Severe diarrhea needs fluids injected into the vains
  • If the disease spreads to the blood stream you will be given antibiotics

MORE NOT SO FUN FACTS

  • A small number of persons with Salmonella develop pain in their joints,
  • irritation of the eyes, and painful urination
  • This is called reactive arthritis
  • Sometimes the diarrhea gets so severe people need to be hospitalized
  • Most people recover without treatment
