Rubus spectabilis

CHARACTERISTICS

  • Salmonberry is a deciduous shrub from 1-4 meter in height. It has erect or arching stems. Stems which grow in the open tend to be unbranched, while those in shade are more likely to be branched.

WHERE THEY GROW

  • Salmonberries usually grow in the tundra where it is moist and where the sun shines
  • If they don’t have sunshine they won’t be juicy
  • Out here they are usually low bushed

WHAT ANIMALS EAT SALMONBERRIES

  • finches, wrens, chats, robins. Small mammals also forage on the berries such as foxes, and squirrels and rabbits and moose eat salmonberries bears love salmonberries too

HUMAN USE OF SALMONBERRIES

  • Humans eat salmonberries or make agutak with them and add blueberries sugar and crisco, or make jams and pies, jelly’s, cakes, ice cream, gummies jello
