Act Responsibly

No Horseplay
Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the science lab. Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks will not be tolerated.

Follow Directions

           Ask if you don't understand
Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ask your teacher questions if you do not understand the directions. (Read the directions. Listen to the instructions given by the teacher. Do not assume you already know what to do.)

No Touching

without permission
Do not touch any equipment, supplies, animals, or other materials in the science room without permission from the teacher.

OnlyAuthorized Experiments

Be sure teacher is present!
Perform only authorized and approved experiments. Do not conduct any experiments when the teacher is out of the room. Do not change the experiment to see what happens without permission.

No Eating

during labs
Never eat, drink, chew gum, or taste anything in the science room without the teacher's permission. Do NOT eat the science experiment or materials.

Keep Hands Away

From Face
Keep hands away from face, eyes, and mouth while using science materials or working with either chemicals or animals.

Safety Goggles are a Must

when instructed
Wear safety goggles when instructed. Never remove safety goggles during an experiment. There will be no exceptions to this rule! You need safety goggles when working with chemicals or objects that could fly through the air.

Neat and Clean

Keep your work area and the science room neat and clean. Have only your laboratory instructions, lab book, and pencil on the table. Store other materials elsewhere. Clean all work areas and equipment at the end of the experiment. Return all equipment clean and in working order to the proper storage area.It is everyone's job to clean up. Clean up spills on the floor or table immediately after reporting them to the teacher.

Dispose of Waste

as directed by teacher.
Dispose of all waste materials generated in an experiment as directed by the teacher. Only pour liquid waste in the sink if directed to do so.

Report Accidents or Injuries

immediately to teacher.
Report any accident (fire, spill, breakage, etc.); injury (cut, burn, etc.); or hazardous condition (broken equipment, etc.) to the teacher immediately.

Don't Touch or Smell Chemicals

without permission
Consider all chemicals used in the science room to be dangerous. Do not touch or smell any chemicals unless specifically instructed to do so by the teacher. Use the "wafting method" to smell chemicals when instructed to do so.

Carry Microscope

with 2 hands
Always carry a microscope with both hands. hold the arm with one hand; place the other hand under the base.

Treat Specimens

with respect
Treat all preserved specimens and dissecting supplies with care and respect. Do not remove preserved specimens from the science room.

Cut Away from Body

Use scalpels, scissors, and other sharp instruments only as instructed. Never cut any material toward your body. Always cut away from your body. Report any cut or scratch from sharp instruments to the teacher immediately.

Stay Out of Cabinets

and Drawers w/o permission
Never open storage cabinets or drawers without permission from the teacher. Never enter the storage closet without permission. Do not handle any materials out on the counters or tables without permission.

Nothing Leaves the Lab

Do not remove chemicals, equipment, supplies, or animals from the science room without permission from the teacher.

Handle Glassware with Care

Handle all glassware with care. Never pick up hot or broken glassware with your bare hands. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glass. Place broken and waste glassware in the designated glass container. Do not immerse hot glassware in cold water; it may shatter. Do not use cracked or chipped glassware; they may break.

Be Careful with Fire

Use extreme caution when using matches, burners, or hot plates. Only light burners or candles when instructed to do so and do not put anything into a flame unless specifically instructed to do so. Do not leave a lit burner or hot plate unattended. Do not use the fire extinguisher. Report all fires immediately to the teacher and follow her instructions.

Dress Properly

Dress properly for labs. Long hair must be tied back; no dangling jewelry; no loose or baggy clothing; push long sleeves back. No bare feet or open-toed shoes.

Safety Equipment

Know Where it is!
Learn where the safety equipment is located and how to use it. Know where the exits are located and what to do in case of an emergency or fire drill. Do not plan on using the fire extinguisher - allow a teacher or adult to do so. Report any hazard immediately to the teacher.

No Wandering

during experiments
Experiments must be personally monitored at all times. Do not wander around the room, distract other students, or interfere with the experiments of others.

Be Careful With Electricity

When removing an electrical plug from its socket, grasp the plug, not the electrical cord. Hands must be completely dry before touching an electrical switch, plug, or outlet. Report any frayed cords to the teacher immediately.
