Background Info
Juan De Onate was born in 1549, Mexico. His mother and father were Catilina De Salazar and Cristobal De Onate. He married Isabella De Tolsa Cortes Moctezuma. ( She was Hernan Cortes's granddaughter. )

Later he was exiled from his colony because of a misunderstanding.

Route
Juan and the colonists .left Santa Barbra, New Spain ( Present day Mexico. ) on Jan. 1598. Then in May they crossed the Rio Grande at El Paso and traveled down a trail called Jornada del Murto to the present day Santa Fe. There he arranged a town called San Juan de Los Caballero. After they settled he went on explorations to Kansas and the Gulf of California looking for gold.

Motives
He explored the U.S. Searching to claim and conquer land for Spain. Juan's other reason that urged him to go was the rumor of treasure and gold . ( The gold didn't exist at all )

Accomplishments
In Juan's travels he founded a city in New Mexico, he searched for gold in California and in Kansas. He also became governor of his coleny.

Impact
Juan de Onate impacted the world when he was malicious to the Natives that inhabited the area. He also started a new colony to keep growing.
