RWANDAN GENOCIDE

BASIC INFORMATION

  • Time Period: 7 April to 15 July 1994
  • Location: Rwanda
  • Deaths: 500,000 to 1,000,000

WHO WAS INVOLVED

  • Target: Tutsi Population
  • Perpetrators: Hutu
  • The genocide was planned by political elite known as akazu.
  • Many perpetrators came from the ranks of the Rwandan Army.
  • The Rwandan president, Habyarimana, initiated Tutsi murders.

WHEN AND WHERE

  • The Rwandan genocide lasted for approximately 100 days.
  • The genocide spanned from April to July 1994.
  • Location: The genocide spanned throughout the entirety of Rwanda.

WHAT OCCURRED?

  • A plane carrying the Rwandan president was shot down by a missle.
  • He had recently allowed Tutsis to participate in government.
  • The Hutu extremists went on to take over the Rwandan government in spite of the Tutsis.
  • When the Hutus gained control, they initiated mass murder of Tutsis.

WHY DID THE GENOCIDE OCCUR?

  • Hutu citizens were resentful towards Tutsis for their past governmental dominance.
  • Hutus believed Tutsis were the cause of all social and economic problems in Rwanda.
