MODERN GENOCIDE

THE DEATH OF THOUSANDS

In the greatest hour of need, the world failed Rwanda.
-Kofi Annan
I believe that we can heal Rwanda - and our world - by healing one heart at a time.
-Immaculee Libagiza

Introduction
The Genocide in Rwanda began on April 7th, 1994. It was between two groups of people seperated by the Belgian known as the Hutu(majority) and the Tutsi(minority). The Hutu were the ones who were killing the the Tutsi off, trying to get rid of them because of the belief that the Hutu president was killed by them from his plane being shot down. There were two groups of Hutu's killing the Tutsi; the Interahamwe(a militia), the main killers, and the army, who supported the killings. At this time there was a civil war between Tutsi rebels trying to take back Rwanda and the Hutu army.

WHY IS RWANDA MEMORIALIZED?

  • The United States and other superpowers, couldve stopped it, and prevented the death of thousands.
  • Approximately 800,000 or more died in this terrible genocide.
  • To educate people further on this modern genocide, and the fact that they couldve stopped it.
  • To remember those who died, and help those who survived the terrible onslaught.
  • Further the knowledge on genocide so that we can prevent it from ever happening again.

CAUSES OF RWANDAN GENOCIDE

  • The Tutsi were the rich minority at the time of the Belgian rule, so Hutu's want payback.
  • The president of Rwanda was killed in a plane crash that was shot down by they believe Tutsi.
  • Economic problems amd poverty were a big cause as well, Hutus were impoverished while Tutsi's were fine.
  • Rwandan Independence, in 1963, when the Tutsis were disciminated against, and went into exile in Uganda.
  • The Civil War, when the Tutsis returned to Rwanda in 1990, a civil war broke out, ending in a cease-fire.

CAUSES OF GENOCIDE
People are divided into “us and them”.
One group denies the humanity of the other group. Members of it are equated with animals, vermin, insects or diseases.
Genocide is always organized… Special army units or militias are often trained and armed
Hate groups broadcast polarizing propaganda
Victims are identified and separated out because of their ethnic or religious identity
It is “extermination” to the killers because they do not believe their victims to be fully human.
The perpetrators deny that they committed any crimes.

What Can Prevent Genocide in the Future?:
1. Sound the alarm and demand action: tell our government and political leaders to act and act as soon as possible.
2. Stop the enablers of the genocide: stop the genocide at the source by cutting off supplies and money supporting and allowing the killings to occur. Shame the corporations into stopping the supplies.
3. Make human rights and genocide prevention a core value in the U.S.: make the government and the rest of the world responsible to stop the mass murders.
