Rwanda economic situation

PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Rwanda

A current ethnic problem

Hutus vs. Tutsis

Consequences of the Genocide

  • Around 800.000 people killed (majority Tutsis). After this, a civil war caused poverty and famine. Despite the devastation, nowadays Rwanda is one of the most prosperous countries in Africa. However, they have a rigid regime, led by a Tutsi minority, and they also have an undeclared war with Congo for the control of mines.
  • Civil war: poverty and famine.

This story began..

  • .. with the Berlin Conference, in which European countries divided Africa for their own wellness and power.
  • Belgium had the power in Rwanda and gave the tutsi minority more privileges than the hutus. Because of this, violence was about to increase.

In 1994..

  • The economic situation was terrible. Most the people in Rwanda, works in the agriculture. This means that the land is a crucial resource for both groups; and demographic increase, started to be a problem. Otherwise, rivalry between both governments increased since both of them wanted the control of Rwanda.

THE day arrived

  • The tension was too big to stand, and the clash between Hutus and Tutsis occurred. The conflict in 1994 began with the slaughter led by Hutus with radical ideas. They used weapons like machetes and guns. After this genocides, the tutsis planned a revenge and then, the civil war came.

¿The consequences?

  • The conflict left a lot of bad things to the population in Rwanda. For example, the thoughts of brutality, lots of children without their parents, and the system of justice became slow and inefficient.

It’s been 21 years since this..

  • They are making changes to rebuilt the country. They have increased the education, but children usually die before their fifth birthday. Besides, rivalry between Tutsi and Hutu continues.

City Kigali

  • In the capital city, Kigali, the modernization and construction of buildings, is producing an urban development. However, just a little percentage of the population is out of the poverty. The rural areas are the most poor.
  • Rwanda still depends on the financial help that the United Nations, foreign governments and ONGS, provide.
