FLAG

• The Russian flag has three equal horizontal fields with white at the top, blue in the middle and red at the bottom. Some Russians believe that white stands for generosity, blue for loyalty and red for courage. There is no official explanation for the meaning of the colors.

• Russia is located in northeastern Europe and northern Asia. It is the largest country in the world—slightly less than 1.8 times the size of the United States, with a total area of 17,075,200 sq km (6,592,771 sq mi). Russia shares boundaries with the Arctic Ocean on the N , northern Pacific Ocean on the W , China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Georgia on the S , and the Black Sea, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Estonia, Finland on the W with a total land boundary of 19,990 km (12,421 mi) and a coastline of 37,653 km (23,396 mi). • The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are the military service of Russia, established after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. On 7 May 1992, Boris Yeltsin signed a presidential decree establishing the Russian Ministry of Defence and placing all Soviet Armed Forces troops on the territory of the Russian SFSR under Russian control.The commander-in-chief of the armed forces is the president of Russia. Although the Russian armed forces were formed in 1992, the Russian military dates its roots back to the times of the Kievan Rus'.

• Russia’s economy relies heavily on its energy sector for economic growth, with an extremely tight correlation between oil prices and the country’s GDP. In the coming decades, Russia will face at least three challenges emanating from a changing global energy landscape. The first will be increased supplies of oil from sources ranging from the United States to Iraq. The second challenge for Russia will be turning the threat of unconventional gas resources into an opportunity, given the potential of shale to undermine Russia’s hold on its traditional and prospective gas importers. The third shift Russia will need to master is in response to a changing demand landscape where, according to all major projections, non-OECD economies will account for the largest share of future fossil fuel demand. Finally, it remains to be seen whether Russia can lead a changing global market structure or whether it merely trails along. While the country could be at the helm of an OPEC-style organization to regulate gas supplies and prices, for example, it could also lose out to strong competition in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector and elsewhere.”
