PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ROOM TRANSFORMATIONS

CREATING A STUDENT CENTRED LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

THE ROOM I INHERITED.....

SPACIOUS, WITH HIGH CEILINGS

LOTS OF EXTRA FURNITURE AND STUFF...

LOTS OF POTENTIAL!!!

THE PLAN

  • Research ideas for creating a comfortable, student-centred classroom .
  • Look for ways to incorporate self-regulation strategies into the learning environment.
  • Begin to outsource and collect furniture and resources for the new room.
  • Look for ideas from my Personal Learning Network and Pinterest

MY FINDINGS

  • Student Centred places and equipment
  • Use the space well
  • Let the students decide!!
  • Try to get clutter free!!!

POLLING THE STUDENTS

  • Students were varied as to what type of environment they liked.
  • 2 Themes emerged: Loud - Bright colours and busy, Quiet: soft colours, calm like swimming
  • Overall, the students were asking for micro-environments/and control over space

THE CHANGE BEGINS TO HAPPEN

STUDENTS DRAW, PLAN, AND BEGIN TO PLACE SOME OUTSOURCED FURNITURE

THE RESULT OF THEIR WORK

  • A reading corner
  • Round tables to collaborate
  • A quiet carral to work
  • Some tall chairs to sit in by the window
  • A student Art wall

THE VIEW FROM THE RAINBOW TABLE

WE COULDN'T GET ENOUGH ROUND TABLES TO ACCOMMODATE 28 STUDENTS SO WE OPTED FOR DESKS

THE "SUNSHINE BAR"

TWO TALL STOOLS FOR STUDENTS TO WORK BY THE SUN.

THE READING GROUP CORNER

CHAIRS AND TABLE CAN BE EASILY MOVED AROUND

THE "SELF-REG" AREA

CHAIR CAN SPIN AND ROCK, AND CAN ALSO BE A CALM DOWN AREA

MORE BENCH SEATING

STORAGE FOR PILLOWS AND COSTUMES/PROPS FOR DRAMA

"QUIETLAND"

HEADPHONES AVAILABLE FOR WHEN STUDENTS NEED A CALM SPACE

2 ROUND TABLES

GOOD FOR GROUP COLLABORATION

OTHER CLASSROOM STRUCTURES

  • A student art wall where the class can collaborate in art
  • A "Genius Bar" where students can work at computers and explore
  • Thera bands installed on many students chairs for exercise and self-regulation
  • No teacher desk, the rainbow table is the place where I can work with students.
  • Lots of pillows to grab and stretch out on the floor to work

OTHER CLASSROOM STRUCTURES

  • Extra large projection on the back wall
  • A basket of squeezers, timers, and toys for self-reg
  • Students take ownership of class jobs and routines

THE CLASS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS

  • Still looking for enough round tables to replace desks
  • Trying to keep spaces clutter free
  • Difficult to create walking lanes at times
  • Creating decorations that are appropriate and useful
  • Students are learning how to use their new spaces properly

THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!
