  • The roman republic was the period of the ancient roman civilian when the gov. Operated as a republic.

  • Men- light weight sporty clothes
  • Women- lightweight dresses and skirts
  • When entering a church you must cover your shoulders and knees

FOOD

  • Heavy on meat and butter
  • Less focused on pasta

EDUCATION

  • It was very important to the Romans
  • Children from rich families were well schooled
  • And they were taught either at home by a private tutor or went to what we would recognize as a school
  • But schools were usually for boys only

EDUCATION

  • Every kid between the ages of 6-14 got to school in Italy
  • The required schooling is followed by a 3 year junior high school then a senior high school

SPORTS

  • Soccer is the most popular sport
  • Each major city has a professional soccer team
  • Basketball, fishing, cycling, roller-skating, and baseball are also popular

CHURCH

  • 95% of Rome's people are Roman Catholic
  • Only 30% of the people regularly attend church
  • The Roman Catholic Church has had a strong influence on laws in the past
  • But now they have weekend allowing, in 1978, abortions
  • And, in 1970, legalizing divorce

ARCHITECTURE

  • Italy is one of the world's greatest center of architecture, art & books
  • A lot of the art museums rank among the most famous in the world
  • The museums are the famous palace of kings or the houses of royal families
  • Including the Pitti Palace and the Uffizi Palace

HOUSING

  • Most of the Romans live in apartments
  • And the wealthy people live in single family homes
  • The poor neighborhoods are usually located on the outer part of the city
  • In the big cities air pollution has damaged many priceless architecture
  • Many cities have banned private cars to help reduce this problem

  • It is referred to as "The Eternal City"
  • Founded in 753 BC
  • Capital of Italy
  • In the homonymous province of the region of Lazio
