Man knows God exists: "For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God." -Romans 1:20
Man's sin is inexcusable: "Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused." -Romans 1:21
God will not force: "Since they thought it foolish to acknowledge God, he abandoned them to their foolish thinking and let them do things that should never be done." -Romans 1:28
Our hearts reveal symptoms: 29 "Their lives became full of every kind of wickedness, sin, greed, hate, envy, murder, quarreling, deception, malicious behavior, and gossip. 30 They are backstabbers, haters of God, insolent, proud, and boastful. They invent new ways of sinning, and they disobey their parents. 31 They refuse to understand, break their promises, are heartless, and have no mercy. 32 They know God’s justice requires that those who do these things deserve to die, yet they do them anyway. Worse yet, they encourage others to do them, too." -Romans 1:29-32
"No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise from God, not from people." -Romans 2:29
“No one is righteous— not even one. 11 No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. 12 All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” -Romans 3:9-12
"For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood." -Romans 3:25
"Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No...we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law." -Romans 3:27
"7 Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. 8 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." -Romans 5:7-8
"Don’t you realize that you become the slave of whatever you choose to obey?...We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin." -Romans 6
"19 I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. 20 But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it." -Romans 7:19-20
"1 So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. 2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death." -Romans 8:1-2
We have refused God > Outer righteousness is useless > No one is righteous > God made a way > Only Christ can save > Slaves to righteousness > Continued struggle with sin > Overcoming by the Holy Spirit
