ROCKSLIDES

  • Rockslides are rapidly moving rock masses moving downward from a steep surface
  • The most disastrous rockslide to occur destroyed 7 villages in only 15 minutes
  • Rockslides are prevented on roads by using steel nets to catch the falling debris

DATE OF EVENT/LOCATION OF EVENT

  • The Frank Slide was a rockslide that occurred in Alberta, Canada on April 29, 1903.

CAUSE

  • The Frank Slide was caused by the mountain's naturally unstable build but too much mining of coal was also a factor.

THE DAMAGE DONE/PEOPLE AFFECTED

  • The rockslide killed over 70 people, destroyed the eastern outskirts of the town, obliterated a two kilometer section of the Canadian Railway, and some small businesses

RECOVERY

  • After more than 11 decades have past, Turtle Mountain has not yet recovered.

CHANGES AFTER DISASTER/AGENCIES THAT HELPED

  • The mountain has become somewhat of a tourist attraction after the famous rockslide occurred. No agency helped to fix damages besides the government itself, and a community center to remind people of what happened has been built.

USES OF GEOGRAPHY

  • The government vowed to pay $1million on mountain surveillance equipment and fulfilled this promise in 2010. This equipment will help know when the next rockslide occurs.
