From a young age Rockefeller showed great interest in business.
he collected stones to paint them and then sell them to his colleagues, whose payments he deposited in a blue bottle
In 1853 he moved with his family to Cleveland, Ohio, and in 1859 he formed a commission company that traded in dry grass, grains, meats and other merchandise.
In 1863 he acquired his first oil refinery in Cleveland, and in 1870 he founded the Standard Oil Company with some partners.
Rockefeller bought the majority interest of competing companies to control the oil refinery industry in Cleveland (1872) and then throughout the country (1882)
John D. Rockefeller had left the business to devote himself to philanthropy, donating thousands of dollars to charities.
He died in 1937, becoming the elderly patriarch of one of the most important families in the history of the United States.
