THREE TYPES OF ROCKS

ROCK DEFINITION

  • A rock is a combination of one or more minerals or organic matter.

HOW ARE THEY CLASSIFIED?

  • One way that rocks are classified is by mineral composition. The composition is the organic matter and the minerals a rock contains.
  • Another way that rocks are classified is through texture. Texture is the size, the shape, and the positions of the grains that make up the rock.

IGNEOUS ROCKS

Igneous Rocks form when liquid magma cools into solid rock.

1 KIND OF IGNEOUS ROCK

  • Intrusive igneous rock forms when magma pushes into surrounding rock below the surface of the Earth. Examples of intrusive igneous rocks are granite and diorite.

ANOTHER KIND OF IGNEOUS ROCK

  • Extrusive igneous rock forms when lava erupts onto the surface of the Earth. Examples of extrusive igneous rocks include obsidian and basalt.

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS FORM THROUGH WEATHERING, EROSION, DEPOSITION, BURIAL, AND CEMENTATION.

CLASTIC SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

  • Clastic sedimentary rocks form when sediments get buried, compacted, and cemented together by Quartz or calcite. Examples of clastic rocks are mudstone, siltstone, and shale.

CHEMICAL SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

  • These rocks form when water (most often seawater), evaporates. An example of a chemical sedimentary rock is halite.
