Igneous, Metamorphic, and Sedimentary.

Igneous
Igneous rocks are formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.

  • There are over 700 different types of igneous rock.
  • Granite is a common igneous rock.

Metamorphic
Metamorphic rocks are formed through extreme pressure and heat.

Metamorphic Rock Facts

  • Marble is a metamorphic rock that is formed from the sedimentary rock limestone.
  • Uplift and erosion help bring metamorphic rock to the Earth's surface.

Sedimentary
Sedimentary rocks are formed when sediment is deposited out of air, ice, wind, gravity or water flows carrying the particles in suspension.

Sedimentary Rock Facts

  • Sedimentary rocks forms layers called strata which can often be seen in exposed cliffs.
  • Chalk is a soft, white form of limestone.

Rock Cycle
The Rock Cycle is a continuous process by which rocks are created, changed from one form to another, destroyed, and then formed again.
