1921 - the word "robot" is coined by Czech playwright, derived from the word robota (peasant labor)
1926 - the first movie robot appears in the silent film "Metropolis"
1940 - writer Isaac Asimov begins publishing short stories about robots and popularizes the word "robotics"

1958 - microprocessors make it possible to add computing ability to any mechanism
1961 - "Unimate", the first robot used in a factory, helps builds cars at a GM plant
1966 - "Eliza", an artificial intelligence program or chatbot, can hold a conversation with a person
