ROAD TO REVOLUTION

THE TIMELINE OF EVENTS THAT LEAD UP TO REVOLUTION IN AMERICA

FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR (7 YEARS WAR)

(1753-1760)

In 1753-England and France go to war for control of colonies and trade.
The Ohio River Valley was the territory contention.
The Natives were caught in between and forced to chose a side.

ENGLAND WINS!

  • The French surrendered after 7 years of bloody conflict.
  • France gives up All North American lands.
  • English settlers began to spread west.

THE STAMP ACT

(1765)

WHY DID THE STAMP ACT ANGER THE COLONIST SO MUCH?

  • Colonist had to pay money for a stamp to put on any papers.
  • King George III passed the law without the consent of the colonist.

Later, King George III repealed the Stamp Act.

WHY DID THE QUARTERING ACT ANGER THE COLONIST SO MUCH?

  • Violated their rights of property and assembly.
  • Violated their rights as Englishman.

King George lll wanted more money to supply the soldiers.
The colonist refused and King George lll threatened to take away their rights.
Colonist believed that taking away their right violated their rights as Englishman.

(1766)

Parliament- Declaring their power.
Parliament repealed the Stamp Act.

TOWNSHEND ACT

(1767)

The Townshend Act was named after Charles Townshend.
The Townshend Act was an effort to make money for soldiers and local government.

THE BOSTON MASSACRE

(1770)

What turned loyal British colonists into angry, rebellious " Americans"?
A series of events, laws, and reactions over representatives government turned loyal British colonist into angry rebellious Americans.

1. Following the Townshend Acts, more troops arrive in Boston to keep order.

2.Night of March 5,1770,
Bostonians harass a group of British soldiers.

3.Shots are fired;
5 dead, including 2 boys.

4.Paul Revere...
Creates an image of the event that shows soldiers as murders.

5. John Adams (2nd president)
Defends the soldiers in court, proves they were not guilty of murderer.

Things were better in Boston afterwards!

THE BOSTON TEA PARTY (1773)

Why did the British Colonist dump boatloads of tea into the Boston harbor?
Bostonians destroyed tea because they believed England's new policy on tea sales hurt their business.

Tax on the tea.
Colonist can only buy tea from the British East India company.
Colonial tea merchants could no longer sell tea.

Sons of liberty, dressed as Indians attack at night and
dump 3 million dollars worth of tea into the harbor.
