Who is Colonel Harland Sanders

  • Is the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken
  • He served his famous fried chicken that became a world sensation

Colonel SAnder's early life

  • Born September 9, 1890 in Henryville
  • Worked as a farmer, insurance salesman, and railroad fireman by age 10
  • Dropped out of the sixth grade
  • Sanders was responsible for feeding his younger siblings at age 6
  • Sander's father died at age 6

Colonel Sander's Career

  • Opened his first restaurant in Kentucky at age 40 (Not KFC)
  • He wanted to open it to feed hungry travelers
  • He also opened it to continue from the depressed life he had lived
  • The only world-wide chicken food chain that was successful

Innovator

  • Transforming an idea, technology, or technique into a good or service
  • Sanders reinvented the way chicken was cooked with the new pressure cooker
  • The pressure cooker cooked chicken in about 9 minutes compared 
  • The old fashioned way to cook fried chicken took about 30 minutes

  • Taking on the risks of starting your own business
  • Investing time, energy, abilities, and money into a business that may fail
  • Sanders took the risk of leaving his small restaurant to kick-start KFC

  • Sanders visited some his restaurants to see how the employees were doing 
  • Sanders wanted to keep the moral of said employees high at all times

  • Sanders decided that his only company be a chicken chain 
  • He also decided to take the next step and make his company international

  • Sanders set the goal of helping hungry travelers and have a business
  • That vision then grew into what we now know as KFC

  • Before Sanders open his restaurant, he was disappointed with his life
  • So, he decided, at around age 40, to open his own business in Kentucky
  • He was deemed a Colonel of Kentucky twice, which bolstered his reputation

  • Sanders quit law school to open his own chicken business
  • Sold many of his KFC restaurants, while keeping his face as the logo
