PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Right Triangle Trigonometry
By Cynthia and Rizzo

WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW?

  • You should have a basic understanding of geometry expressions
  • You should know how the pythagorean theorem works
  • Lastly, you should know the properties of similar triangles!

THE RULES!

  • Of course, it only works with right triangles.
  • 3 sides: hypotenuse, opposite and adjacent.
  • The hypotenuse will always be the longest side.

Before starting on this, memorizing SOHCAHTOA will help with solving any problem!

SOHCAHTOA

How can you calculate unknown sides in a right triangle?

To SOLVE A TRIANGLE means to know all three sides and all three angles. When we know the ratios of the sides, we use the method of similar figures. That is the method to use when solving an isosceles right triangle or a 30°-60°-90° triangle. When we do not know the ratio numbers, then we must use the Table of ratios.

When finding a length of one of the sides, you need to know the measurement of and angle other than the 90 degree angle an a side length to solve the problem.

Example

Applying it to the real world.

The angle of elevation of an airplane is 23 degrees. If the airplane's altitude is 2500 m, how far away is it?

Let the distance be x Then sin23=2500/x.
x= 2500/sin23.
2500/sin23=6400m
