APPROPRIATE ATTIRE FOR RIDING LESSONS AND HORSE SHOWS

RIDING LESSONS

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

HELMET!!!!!

YOU MUST WEAR YOUR HELMET WHENEVER YOU ARE ON OR NEAR A HORSE!

HELMETS

  • Must Fit Correctly
  • Must Be ASTM/SEI Certified for Equestrian Use
  • Preferably do not have an adjustable dial, but some of these are ok
  • Should be replaced every three years
  • Should not be second-hand or borrowed

HELMET FIT

  • As snugly as you can comfortably wear without giving you a headache
  • Should sit down on your head so that it shades your eyes (not on the back of your head)
  • It should not rock even when you bend over and shake your head
  • Chin strap should be tight enough that you can not pull it off your chin
  • The buckles on the sides should be up by your ears.

BOOTS

BOOTS FOR RIDING AND WORKING AROUND THE PONIES

Untitled Slide

BOOTS FOR RIDING

  • Must have a small heel- so that your foot does not slip through your stirrup
  • Should be leather or synthetic
  • Should not have a deep tread or waffle sole- because they can get caught in a stirrup
  • Paddock or Jodhpur Boots are Best

SHOES FOR WORKING AROUND PONIES

NEVER WORK AROUND PONIES IN CLOTH OR CANVES SHOES, SANDALS, OPEN TOES, OR BARE FEET

LONG PANTS

MUST BE WORN WHILE RIDING

Untitled Slide

TALL SOCKS

ARE RECOMMENDED OVER YOUR RIDING PANTS

HALF CHAPS

GIVE YOU EXTRA PROTECTION AND ARE VERY HELPFUL WHEN YOU BEGIN JUMPING

SHIRT

  • Long or short sleeved to cover at least the tops of your arms
  • Long enough to tuck in and always TUCKED IN!
  • Shirts like polos, dress shirts "ratcatchers", or turtlenecks are best for lessons

GLOVES

WEARING GLOVES CAN KEEP YOU FROM GETTING BLISTERS AND WILL HELP YOU HOLD THE REINS

HAIR

LONG HAIR SHOULD BE IN A LOW PONYTAIL OR BRAID TO KEEP IN NEAT AND OUT OF YOUR FACE

BELT

SHOULD BE WORN IF YOU HAVE BELT LOOPS!

PLEASE SPIT YOUR GUM OUT

YOU COULD CHOKE IF YOU RIDE WITH GUM IN YOUR MOUTH:-(

PLEASE DO NOT WEAR

  • Dangly earrings
  • Necklaces or bracelets that could get caught in your pony's mane
  • Scarves or other loose clothing that could catch on things while you

WINTER BRRRRR

  • Wear layers of clothes in winter to keep you toasty warm
  • Make sure that your clothes allow you to move freely
  • Be sure that your gloves are not too bulky to hold the reins easily

DOESN'T HURT

IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO WEAR A BODY PROTECTOR WHEN YOU RIDE- ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE JUMPING!!

MOST IMPORTANTLY

ALWAYS WEAR A SMILE
