POLITICAL BACKGROUND

  • He served as a representative and Senator for california.
  • He was the 36th vice president and then later became the 37th president.
  • In office January 20, 1969 – August 9, 1974
  • His vice president was Gerald Ford.
  • Republican

Nixon's early life was marked by hardship, and he later quoted a saying of Eisenhower to describe his childhood: "We were poor, but the glory of it was we didn't know it".

EARLY LIFE

  • Both Nixon's parents were quakers.
  • He was the second oldest of five.
  • Richards brother Arthur died in 1925,
  • And his brother Harold died later in 1933
  • At the age of 12, a spot was found on Richard's lung.

  • When Richard graduated from Duke university, he became a lawyer.
  • He then met Pat Ryan and after two years, married her.
  • They had two daughters, Tricia and Julie.
  • He then enlisted in the Navy and remained in the Navy until 1946

FOREIGN AFFAIRS

  • Nixon laid the groundwork for his overture to China before presidency
  • "There is no place on this small planet for a billion of its potentially most able people to live in angry isolation."
  • Border clashes between the Soviet Union and China took place during Nixon's first year in office

VIETNAM WAR

  • When Nixon took office, about 300 American soldiers were dying each week in Vietnam
  • A lot of protesting took place against the war.

The Watergate scandal was a major political scandal that occurred in the United States in the 1970s as a result of the June 17, 1972, break-in at the Democratic National Committee

Nixon resigned soon after the Watergate Scandal took place, and was the only president to ever resign.
