When you are looking to open a small home studio, it’s smart to buy versatile microphones that are affordable and can be used for multiple functions. Here are some of the best:

1. Shure SM57 – The best! You can record vocals with this mic, it sounds amazing when you put it in front of a guitar cab, it’s decent for snares and high hats, and ideal for other auxiliary instruments. It is a good all around mic, and at $99 an easy way to get started.

2. Shure SM58 – The most popular vocal mic live and often used in studios. This veritable microphone at around $99 is THE mic for vocals and good enough for use in the studio.

3. Shure SM7B – This mic is not incredibly veritable, but it is the best mic at what it does. Record Rock and Roll vocals. With bass rolloff, a built in pop filter, and mid range boost, you’ll sound amazing with this mic. At $350, if you need an awesome rock vocal, this is a solid mic.
