RHETORICAL DEVICES

ANTITHESIS

  • Scheme( a change in word order, involves syntax and diction)
  • Definition(a contrast or comparison of words in a parallel structure.)
  • Mainly used to show similarities or differences.
  • Examples: one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
  • Speech is silver, but silence is golden.
  • It was the Best of times, it was the worst of times.

HYPERBOLE

  • Trope( involves a metaphorical word or phrase)
  • Definition(a figure of speech using an exaggerated statement or claim. Not to be taken literally)
  • Hyperboles are used to put emphasis on metaphorical phrases.
  • Examples: My backpack weighs a ton.
  • My head is killing me.
  • This drive is taking forever
